Chapter 14

Late the next morning, after exploring each other a few more times in the dark of night and sleeping in past breakfast as a result, Enid told Drake over their own, private meal he’d conjured out of the air for them, that she’d like a chance to get to know Mae, one on one.

“Alone? Are you sure? If it was her who brought that chandelier down on your head and there’s no one there to counter the next one…”

“I believed her when she said it wasn’t her at the council. She didn’t have to do that, reach out to me like that. But she did. I’d like to reach back. I’d like to show her that I do believe her, and having body guards would defeat the purpose. You don’t really still believe it was her, do you?”

“No, I don’t. Not after our talk yesterday.”

“Then that’s settled. She didn’t do it. Would she meet with me, do you think? Just the two of us? And if so, is there anything around here we can do together? Oh, shit. It won’t work at all, will it?”

“That was a quick change of heart.”

“No, I mean, she’s too young in her human form to speak, and I can’t hear dragon thoughts, so…”

“Ah, yes. I see what you mean.”

“We’d need an interpreter, and having someone else there would defeat the purpose of a private conversation,” she said with a sad sigh.

“You forget where you are, my dear,” Drake responded.

“How so?”

“Dragons are magic. I can’t give you a link to dragons as a whole, not without the permissions of every dragon in the realm, but if Mae is willing, I can forge a link between the two of you.”

“You could? Do you think she’d be willing?”

“There’s only one way to find out. I need to talk to Ekard anyway. Once their lessons are over for the day, I’ll go ask.”

“You’re still letting them carry on with their lessons? You said he was teaching her things you didn’t approve of.”

“That’s why I need to speak with him. But I saw no need to end their lessons, that would just confuse Mae. She’s going to hear all kinds of differing opinions on all kinds of different things in her life. Instead of keeping her away from opinions that don’t mesh with mine, I’d rather she be exposed to many opinions, so she can find her own truth in them somewhere.”

“A king who doesn’t force his opinions on others? That can’t be right.”

He laughed at her as they finished eating, and then they waited for Mae’s lessons to end by entertaining themselves once again, messing up the neat bed Drake had already made with his mind.
